Common Japanese Truck Problems & Solutions
Real-world symptoms, likely causes and how GTS fixes them — so you can get back on the road with confidence.
Diagnose Before You Tow
Not every warning light means a major repair. Below are the most common issues we see on Hino, Isuzu & Fuso trucks in Geelong and across Victoria — with the causes we check first and the solutions we apply in our workshop.
Engine & Performance
Power loss, hard starting, excessive smoke and fault codes.
Hard starting or slow crank
- Weak or failing battery
- Faulty starter motor
- Glow plug wear (cold mornings)
Test battery voltage and load capacity, inspect starter and replace worn glow plugs. We carry batteries and starters for common Hino, Isuzu & Fuso models.
Loss of power under load
- Clogged fuel filter
- Turbocharger issues
- Blocked DPF or intake
Replace fuel filters, inspect turbo hoses and intercooler, and perform a forced DPF regeneration if needed.
Excessive black or white smoke
- Over-fuelling or injector fault
- Burning coolant (white smoke)
- Poor combustion
Diagnose injectors, compression and cooling system. We repair or replace injectors and address head-gasket concerns before they escalate.
Electrical & Diagnostics
Warning lights, battery drain, sensor faults and module errors.
Check engine or ABS warning light on
- Sensor fault
- Wiring damage
- Module communication error
Scan with Japanese-truck compatible diagnostic tools, trace the fault code and repair the root cause — not just clear the light.
Battery keeps going flat
- Failing alternator
- Parasitic drain
- Old battery
Test alternator output, identify parasitic drains and replace the battery if it no longer holds charge.
AdBlue / DEF system fault
- Contaminated DEF
- Failed dosing pump
- NOx sensor error
Flush and refill correct-grade AdBlue, test the dosing pump and replace NOx sensors as required.
Transmission & Driveline
Hard shifting, clutch slip, unusual noises and vibration.
Hard or delayed gear shifts
- Low or old transmission fluid
- Worn synchros
- Clutch adjustment
Service the gearbox, replace fluid and inspect clutch linkage. Automatic models may need a mechatronic or software check.
Clutch slipping or jerking
- Worn clutch plate
- Faulty release bearing
- Hydraulic leak
Inspect clutch assembly and hydraulics. We replace clutches with quality kits matched to your Hino, Isuzu or Fuso model.
Driveshaft vibration or clunk
- Worn universal joints
- Out-of-balance tail shaft
- Loose centre bearing
Balance or rebuild the tail shaft, replace U-joints and check diff mounts to prevent further driveline damage.
Brakes & Suspension
Spongy pedal, brake noise, steering wander and uneven tyre wear.
Spongy or low brake pedal
- Air in brake lines
- Worn brake pads or drums
- Brake fluid leak
Bleed the brake system, inspect pads, drums, rotors and hoses, and repair any leaks before the truck goes back to work.
Steering pulls or wanders
- Worn tie rods or kingpins
- Incorrect wheel alignment
- Uneven tyre pressures
Inspect steering components, align the front end and rotate or replace tyres as needed.
Rough ride or suspension sag
- Worn shock absorbers
- Fatigued leaf springs
- Air suspension fault
Replace shocks, repair or re-arch leaf springs, and diagnose air-ride systems for leaks or compressor faults.
Cooling & Leaks
Overheating, coolant loss, oil leaks and HVAC issues.
Engine overheating
- Low coolant
- Faulty thermostat
- Blocked radiator
- Water pump failure
Pressure-test the cooling system, flush the radiator, replace the thermostat or water pump, and refill with correct coolant.
Coolant or oil leaks
- Perished hoses
- Failed gasket or seal
- Radiator corrosion
Locate the leak with UV dye or pressure testing, replace hoses, gaskets or the radiator as required.
Air conditioning not cold
- Low refrigerant
- Compressor fault
- Blocked condenser
Re-gas the system, test compressor operation and clean or replace the condenser to keep cab comfort up in summer.
Exhaust & Emissions
DPF warnings, excessive regeneration and emissions faults.
DPF warning light keeps returning
- Short trips causing incomplete regen
- Blocked DPF
- Sensor fault
Perform a forced static regeneration, clean or replace the DPF, and advise on driving habits to reduce future blockages.
Excessive diesel particulate smell
- DPF not trapping soot
- Exhaust leak
- Incomplete combustion
Inspect DPF condition and exhaust joints. Repair leaks and address engine tuning to restore clean combustion.
Simple Checks That Save Big Bills
Many breakdowns are preventable. Operators who run through these four checks each week catch problems early and avoid unplanned downtime.
Battery voltage
12.6V+ at rest, 13.8V+ charging
Oil & coolant
Check levels before every trip
Brakes & tyres
Inspect weekly for wear and pressure
Fuel quality
Use clean diesel from reputable sources
